Back-up rings are mainly used to serve the exact function their name implies. They are a firm seal designed to “back up” other materials that are in place to prevent the primary rings (usually o-rings) from slipping or extruding, which could lead to severe damage and thus unwanted leakage.
While o-rings may be enough of a seal under low pressure situations, at higher pressures they may fail if not paired with another hard rubber or contoured seal.
